Suds & Science with Vermont Center for Ecostudies and JAM
Suds & Science with Vermont Center for Ecostudies and JAM
For the upcoming 2025 season (January through May) we are excited to announce that Suds & Science will be held in vibrant, downtown White River Junction at the incredible Putnam's vine/yard! Putnam's is a lush space, filled with plants, and offers light food and a full bar with the best wine menu around. We'll have a microphone and speaker this season as well, to ensure that you can clearly hear our visiting scientists. Bring the whole family--kids are welcomed at Putnam's. We are excited to bring the science to downtown, and Jason and crew can't wait to see you there! Once again, Suds & Science will be filmed by JAM, thanks to National Science Foundation funding provided by Dan Olsen. It takes a village doesn't it, folks?
Each month (from January through May) Suds & Science provides you with the opportunity to interact with a scientific expert in their field. Suds & Science isn't some boring academic talk with mindless PowerPoint slides. No. Thank. You. Instead, picture a scientist standing in your living room--talking with you and your friends. Engage an expert, ask questions, and leave knowing more than you did when you walked in. All talks are free and appropriate for all ages.
Reach out to our longtime host Jason Hill (jhill@vtecostudies.org) with any questions, and please introduce yourself to Jason. All talks are from 7-8 pm (typically a 40 minute talk + questions), but come join Jason beforehand and stay afterwards to keep the discussion going.
2025 Season Schedule:
January 7 (Tuesday): Dr. Celia Chen [Dartmouth]. Tentative topic: Toxicology and aquatic food web contamination
February 4 (Tuesday): Dr. Jordon Tourville [Appalachian Mountain Club]. Tentative topic: mycorrhiza
March 6 (Thursday): Kristen Jovanelly [Dartmouth]. Tentative topic: agroforestry
April 1 (Tuesday): Dr. Simon Stone [Dartmouth]. "How I discovered a new German speech sound – and why nobody cares"

Live Music: Los Lorcas
Join Los Lorcas for Poetry in Concert before they head off for a tour of Ireland!
LOS LORCAS: Poetry in Concert
One of the most versatile and adventurous bard bands touring today, Los Lorcas are making ground-breaking inroads where most poets and musicians fear to tread, conjuring rich lyrical and sonic tapestries that defy predictable niches while celebrating “the music of what happens.”
In the spirit of Federico Garcia Lorca—gifted musician, legendary poet/playwright and ebullient performer—poets Partridge Boswell and Peter Money, along with fiddler Jakob Breitbach and guitarist Nat Williams, fuse poetry and music in a passionate and surprising mash-up. Los Lorcas blur boundaries between spoken word and song, weaving poetry with Andalusian ballads, blues, rock, folk, reggae, hip hop, Americana and jazz in pursuit of the cante jondo (deep song) Lorca ardently championed.
The house band for the Grolier Poetry Book Shop, Los Lorcas explore common roots and synergies of poetry and music, celebrating the poetry of song lyrics and music of lyrical poetry. Inspired by artists diverse as Lorca, Yeats, Marley, Dylan, Dickinson, Springsteen, Kavanagh, Matisyahu, Morrison, Brooks, Cohen, Bowie, Lumineers, Heaney, REM, Merwin, Millay and others, the group’s timely and soulful compositions weave themes of love, loss, homelessness, empathy, activism and gratitude—all through a filter of the American dream. Veteran Vermont musician and producer Kristina Stykos has taken a shine to the new trio: “A lot of great musicians have come around here, but not with the poetry chops that this group has—in spades. A project sprouted from the literary side, their cross pollination blending poetry, personality, musicality, vitality of many colors and creative intensity is so satisfying!” After years of honing their distinctive genre-bending blend of music and poetry on stages across the state, country and internationally, Los Lorcas recently released their debut album LAST NIGHT IN AMERICA on Vermont’s Thunder Ridge Records label.
“… and then listened to Los Lorcas...WOW!!! the second time through I had tears on EVERY SINGLE Song...wow and double wow...and the third time through....Innisfree became cherished for its sweetness—a whole sound....The rest is SO powerful and Quirky and intensely wonderful...”—Chuck Cole, Cape Cod Community Radio
Troubadouring widely in the US and abroad (Ireland, Canada and Slovenia), Los Lorcas have performed everywhere from farmhouse kitchens to pubs, coffeehouses, schools, theaters and 1,000+ book and music festival crowds [e.g. Boston Book Festival, Poetry Center San Jose, San Francisco State University, Fable Farm Feast & Field, Massachusetts Poetry Festival, New Orleans Poetry Festival (w/ Cornelius Eady), Harvard Square Octoberfest, Burlington Book Festival, Levis Corner House (Ireland), Tucson Book Festival, Bookstock Literary Festival (w/ Robert Pinsky’s PoemJazz), Chandler Music Hall, Strokestown and Fingal Poetry Festivals (Ireland), Vermont College of Fine Arts, Salt Hill Pub, KGB Reading Series, Cantab Lounge, Bowery Poetry Club, Nuyorican Poetry Café and Caffe Lena]—attesting to the broad appeal of their liberating vision of how poetry and music are two sides of the same spinning coin which together render a mesmerizing symbiosis.
“Los Lorcas in unity is a marvel that would silence any creative individual to awe, inspiring the quietest observer to reach for each word as if they were Federico Lorca himself, meditating on song and poetry mid-stage, arms outstretched.”—Bianca Viñas
“Thank you and Los Lorcas for a wonderful gig - it was enjoyed immensely and talked about the following day. We could have had you a second night! it was such fun.”
—Joseph Woods, Director, Strokestown Poetry Festival and Poetry Ireland
“What a splendid conclusion to April! Today marked the grand celebration of Poetry Month in Limerick 2024, held at The People's Museum of Limerick. The event was graced by the captivating performances of US poet Partridge Boswell and the talented ensemble Los Lorcas, who seamlessly merged poetry and music to create an electrifying experience for all in attendance.
Their repertoire ranged from the poignant verses of Kavanagh's 'Raglan Road' to the soulful melodies of Bob Dylan's 'Kansas City,' each piece delivered with remarkable passion and energy. Notably, band member and poet Peter Money added a distinctive flavor to the performance with his evocative spoken word poetry, reminiscent of the spirit of the 'beats,' complemented by the delicate guitar accompaniment of Partridge and Nat, weaving a tapestry of sound and emotion that left a lasting impression on the audience.”
—Dominic Taylor, Limerick Writer’s Centre

Lia has always been fascinated with nature, and after growing up in Colorful Colorado, she found herself in the Adirondacks and fell in love with the Northeast. While traveling, Lia learned a deeper sense of appreciation for the plant life surrounding her and decided to settle down in the beautiful Connecticut River Valley. Meet our Master Gardener:
Lia has always been fascinated by nature. After growing up in Colorful Colorado, she found herself in the Adirondacks and fell in love with the Northeast. While traveling and cooking in Alaska, Montana and Telluride, Lia learned a deeper sense of appreciation for the plants surrounding her. She decided to leave seasonal life and settle down in the beautiful Connecticut River Valley. Here, she became Certified in Sustainable Landscape Design and eventually became a Master Gardener for the state of Vermont. Devoted to her craft, she spends her summers gardening and teaching here at Putnam’s Vineyard or in the White Mountains, where she enjoys kayaking and birding. Lia plans to continue learning about the world around her for many years to come, and hopes you will join her on this journey!

STAGE RES: P's MEET UP: Shut Up & Write!(TM) Upper Valley
Join us for an hour of writing! We’ve discovered that it’s strikingly helpful to write with other writers. See if it’s true for you at 11am on Sundays at Putnam's vine/yard. RSVP here.
Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done around other people doing the same thing.
What Should I Bring?
Whatever you need to be able to write!
Bring earbuds/earplugs if you want to block the overhead music or the conversation by other patrons.
GUIDELINES:
Space is limited so registration will be required. Link to register is coming soon.
SCHEDULE
10:30 - 10:45 - Arrive, get set up and make quick introductions
10:45 - Timer starts: write for 1 hour
11:45 - The End: chat, take off, or keep writing
OPTIONAL SOCIALIZING Writing is very solitary. Connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing.
BEING LATE IS OKAY: just show up and get settled, then check in with us after the session. If you were on time, please be willing to make room for the friendly latecomer. Also feel free to sit elsewhere if you'd like and touch base with us at the end.
Happy writing and we look forward to seeing you there!
WHAT IS SHUT UP AND WRITE?
Shut Up & Write hosts free in-person and online writing events for writers all over the world. Our goal is to ensure that every writer, regardless of genre or skill level, has access to the community, accountability, and resources they need to be successful in their personal writing goals. Our events use our proven formula: a few minutes of introductions, an hour of focused writing, and a final check-in to share the hour's progress.
